Buying Guide: Skateboard Pads (Risers)
Why use skateboard pads?
Skateboard pads (or risers) are essential accessories for customizing your setup. Their primary function? To prevent "wheel bite," the phenomenon where your wheels rub against your deck during a sharp turn. They also allow you to adjust your center of gravity for increased stability.
Types of pads and their utility
The choice depends on the size of your wheels and the height of your trucks:
- Shock Pads (1/8"): Made of rubber, they are perfect for absorbing micro-vibrations and protecting your deck from cracks around the drill holes.
- Thin Risers (1/8"): They raise your trucks to gain a slight space and prevent wheel bite.
- Thick Risers (1/4" or more): Essential if you mount large wheels (57mm and +) on a bowl or cruising oriented board.
- Materials: Hard plastic promotes energy transfer (pop), while rubber (shock pads) prioritizes cushioning and comfort.
The skateshop's opinion
If you feel unpleasant vibrations under your feet, switching to rubber shock pads can radically change your comfort. It's a small investment that protects your skateboard deck and your joints in the long run.
Assembly warning: Adding pads means you will absolutely need to change your hardware to a longer model. Make sure you have the correct dimensions before finalizing your assembly. Need help balancing your setup or choosing the right hardware? Contact our team for personalized advice.
